Home Learning

At Southfields we believe in the strong partnership between home and school to positively impact children’s learning.  We have strong beliefs that the school as well as parents play an important role in supporting, practicing and encouraging teaching and learning.

We firmly believe in the importance of parents and school working in partnership to support children in their learning. We are open and honest and have developed a wonderful relationship with our families.  We host a number of different events to support our parents including Workshops, Family events, Termly opening events as well as coffee mornings.

We ask parents to support us by practising daily some of the skills we have been teaching in school with reading, spelling and GHASP - grammar, handwriting and spelling.  In addition to this we also ask that children learn their times tables and number facts appropriate to their ages. This practice is essential and varies depending on the child some pupils need more practice to embed their learning and there is not time always in school to ensure they reach age appropriate goals and therefore parents will be asked to support learning to ensure their child does not fall behind their peers.

In addition to the basics we have home learning journals where the children are asked to research and show their learning in a creative and imaginative way.  These skills of topic work and personal research are essential lifelong learning and good attitudes to learning beyond the school.  Below is an examples of the homework menu for year 5:
