Southfields Primary School

Mrs Welsh and Mrs Churchill

Welcome to 2020! We hope you have all had a wonderful break over Christmas and have made lots of wonderful family memories.

Firstly, we’d like to thank all of year 6 for their hard work over the Autumn term and, likewise, thank all parents for your continued support. We are pleased that ClassDojo is being used to keep communication between us open. We encourage you to continue to use this resource to share successes and ask any questions that you may have.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to Mrs Churchill, our new year 6 teacher. Mrs Churchill has 20+ years of experience working in a secondary school, with a specialism in English and is excited to get stuck in to helping us prepare the children for their next journey in their education.

Our exciting topic for the Spring term is:

‘A Rumble in the Rainforest’

“Imagine a world where water drops on your face when it isn’t even raining, where in the distance the sound of drums rumble, and where the squirrel monkey leaps in the high canopy; this is the rainforest. Come with us as we explore the range of animals that hide deep in the undergrowth, that scurry up the trees beside us and that swoop above us, squawking noisily as they go. Are you brave enough to face the Maya Civilisations as we try to follow the journey of their precious cocoa beans to our delicious chocolate bars? Consider the ethical dilemmas that will be faced when not cutting down ‘The Great Kapok Tree’ could cost the woodman his livelihood, but would mean the animals lose their homes. So, get on your walking boots, pack your essentials in your backpack and let’s rumble in the rainforest!”

We are looking forward to fully immersing ourselves in this topic, including a visit from The Explorers Academy and through various of the foundation subjects:

Science: Classification, Adaptation and the wonderful medicines in the rainforest

Geography: Location and features of the rainforests.

History: The Maya civilisation

Design and Technology: All things chocolate, including designing and making our own bar.

Art: Hybrid animals inspired by Lisa Ericson

Religious Education: Buddhism

PSHCE: Looking after myself

Music: Rainforest inspired music, through history, including tribal music.

We look forward to an enjoyable and hardworking term.

A few House Keeping Reminders:

School Uniform:

We feel it is very important for children to be in full school uniform. Not only does it help them to ensure their focus is on their school work, it will prepare them for the strict requirements of secondary school.

Please follow this link to see the required uniform:

PE Kit:

Our class will be carrying out PE on Fridays, however there may be other opportunities throughout the week therefore we ask that the children get into the habit of bringing it in on a Monday morning and taking it home on a Friday to be cleaned. They will require both an indoor and outdoor kit.

In preparation for the increased homework requirements of secondary school and in preparation for their end of year SATs, we will be setting weekly English and Mathematics homework. Additional ‘blue book’ homework projects (chosen from a menu of tasks) will also be set so that the children still have opportunity to express their creativity. Homework is set on Thursday and is due in on Tuesday. Pupils have the opportunity to receive help with homework from 12:30-1pm during Monday and Friday lunchtimes.

A strong home-school partnership is so important to me. We both play an integral part in your child’s year 6 journey and I would love for us to communicate openly.

Class DoJo is the most effective means of communication between us and I urge you, if you have not already, to connect to this as soon as possible. I am also happy to meet face to face as and when required. I am sure you can appreciate that my schedule afterschool is very busy therefore I ask that these meetings be prearranged via Dojo Messenger or through the school office.
