Southfields Primary School

Mrs Millington

Welcome back!

We hope you have all had a lovely Summer break and have enjoyed the lovely weather we have had.

We are looking forward to this term! Over the Summer we have all been busy getting the classrooms ready and planning lots of lovely lessons for you all. This half term we will be studying the following:

History – Transport over time and Fire, Fire.

Geography -  UK maps and symbols

Science – Materials in our world.

Art and Design – Train mechanisms, exploring painting techniques and colour mixing.

Computing – Typing skills and e-mails.

RE – Why do we give to others? Why are presents given at Christmas?

Music – Great fire of London

PSHE – New beginnings and Getting on and falling out.

Languages – Italian

As well as these lovely topics, we will be focusing on a range of different reading texts including fiction, non-fiction and poetry in our English and Guided Reading lessons.

As the children begin the final year of KS1, we will be working hard on developing the children’s independence in school. This will include the children choosing and deciding upon some of their own learning activities, finding the resources in the classroom they think will help with their learning as well as taking responsibility for completing their home learning tasks.

Homework this year will be as follows:

Reading- daily with an adult and a signature and comment to show they have read with someone.

Times tables – daily

Spellings – daily

Diary – daily (we will begin the year completing these in school at the end of each day).

Maths homework – once a week linked to the learning they will have done in lessons.

Topic homework – once every two weeks. This homework can be creative, research based and it can including drawings and writing. This is the children’s opportunity to demonstrate their best work.

Topic homework for this half term:

What materials can you find around the home?

Design a car or train. You will need these designs for our DT project in class.

Show me what you learnt at Nene Valley Railway.

This year our classes PE day is a Tuesday. We would advise that PE kits come into school on a Monday and then children will take them home on a Friday. Some weeks there may be the possibility for extra PE or fitness activities.

During this term, the children will have the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular activities after school, have a trip out to Nene Valley Railway and star in their very own Christmas performance.

We hope the children are excited about coming back to school. We know this year will go extremely quickly as we have many exciting things planned in across the year.

We look forward to seeing you all soon.
