Miss Tawn

Autumn Term 2018

I would like to wish a warm welcome to my new class and parents! I hope this page will be helpful to provide you with some useful information throughout the year.

Our first topic will be 'Travelling through time' and we will be focusing on how travel and transport have changed over the years. A key focus will be George Stephenson and the invention of the Steam Train, linking in to our first class trip to Nene Valley Railway (dates of this trip to follow).

During this first topic we shall be looking at non-fiction texts in English, creating information leaflets and guides. We will be exploring UK maps in Geography and mechanisms in DT. Our PE focus will be throwing and catching and we are looking at materials in Science. Our Mathematics will be using the PowerMaths scheme that the children were introduced to last year with great success.

As the children begin the final year of KS1, we will be working hard on developing the children’s independence in school. This will include the children choosing and deciding upon some of their own learning activities, finding the resources in the classroom they think will help with their learning as well as taking responsibility for completing their home learning tasks.

Homework this year will be as follows:

Reading- daily with an adult and a signature and comment to show they have read with someone.

Times tables – daily

Spellings – daily

Diary – daily (we will begin the year completing these in school at the end of each day).

Maths homework – once a week linked to the learning they will have done in lessons.

Topic homework – once every two weeks. This homework can be creative, research based it can including drawings and writing. This is the children’s opportunity to demonstrate their best work.

The term dates for Autumn are as follows:

Autumn Term

Opens: Wednesday 5th September

Half Term: 22nd to 26th October (Inclusive)

 Ends: Wednesday 19th December

This year our classes PE day is a Tuesday. We would advise that PE kits come into school on a Monday and then children will take them home on a Friday. Some weeks there may be the possibility for extra PE or fitness activities.

During this term, the children will have the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular activities after school, have a trip out to Nene Valley Railway and star in their very own Christmas performance.

We hope that the children continue to come home and tell you about all of the exciting things we have been learning in year 2.  Class dojo will be used as  a key communication aid with weekly updates about classroom learning and reminders of important events. We are able to message quickly on there if you would like. If you have any worries or concerns then please feel free to speak to one of the adults at the beginning or end of the day, send a dojo message or if necessary telephone the school office to arrange an appointment with one of us.
