Each week an open-ended homework activity will be given to the pupils on a Friday afternoon. (Homework may change in structure as part of revision in the build up to the statutory assessments.) This style of home learning allows the children to develop their creative style as well as provide opportunities for extended writing. These activities are fantastic for children to practise their writing skills. Year 6 homework is due in on the following Wednesday unless otherwise stated. The children may also be set additional Mathematics homework, which will also be due in on a Wednesday.
The pupils are also set daily spelling, reading and times tables. The set spelling words are based on the new curriculum’s demands and may be a little challenging at points. We encourage the children to take their time to look, cover, write and check these words. If you would like to help your child further at home, pupils can practise applying the words in to sentences or complete a ‘practice test’ based on the weekly spelling words. The daily reading homework is important at Southfields and we encourage children to read a variety of texts. To help your child’s comprehension and improve their skills, it is beneficial to ask your child questions about what they have read. Also, we cannot stress the importance of times tables so there will be a page for the child to complete.
